Fizzling Floor by Jean McGuire

This trap involves a fragile, vanishing stone floor -- so fragile, in fact, that it has vanished several times in changes to the Sharebook system.

The fun part about this trap is that the players do it to themselves. It requires a Wall of Stone type of spell cast horizontally, to act as the floor of a room whose real floor is many feet below and equipped with your favorite pit lining. (I'm a traditionalist, myself, and rather fond of rusty spikes) The magic-user who cast the spell carefully crafted it to be "fragile" so that it is vulnerable to any type of dispelling, with no save permitted.

First, you need to make sure the entire party is inside the room. If your players are the kind who check things out from the doorway first, a curtain hung across most of the middle of the room should do the job. A solid wall can be substituted if they're inclined to use long-range destruction spells on suspicious curtains. Then you need to get them to dispell the floor. In a game system where the main magic remover is an area-effect spell, this is easy; just tempt them with something that needs dispelled. (in AD&D;, I used a Projected Image nailing the victims with lightning bolts) If your magic-removers are more specific, making sure the floor has a faint magical aura and painting some ominous looking symbols on it should do the job.

So ... they walk in ... there's something that they figure they need to dispell ... they dispell it ... and the floor goes away. *maniacal laughter*
